Informal portrait of 20946 Able Seaman Leslie Danson (Les) Hopkins, far right, and other crew ...
Description
Informal portrait of 20946 Able Seaman Leslie Danson (Les) Hopkins, far right, and other crew members of HMAS Nizam, in an Italian run prisoner of war (POW) camp in the desert in Egypt. The sailors had been on leave at a Royal Navy rest camp in Egypt, probably at Sidi Bishr near Alexandria. Following their stay they boarded a train to return to their ship which was docked at Alexandria. The train was captured by German soldiers and the sailors were taken to the POW camp. They were liberated after a few days by members of a New Zealand force.
