Description
Studio portrait of VX21231 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Albert Eric Martin, 'C' Company, 2/2 Pioneer Battalion. A florist from Cheltenham Victoria, L Cpl Martin enlisted on 15 May 1940. He saw service against the Vichy French forces in Syria before Australian troops were withdrawn to fight against the Japanese. Reported missing in action on 30 April 1942 in Java, he was taken prisoner of war (POW) and interned in a Japanese POW camp. He died at sea on 12 September 1944, aged 29, when the transport ship Rakuyo Maru was torpedoed by an American submarine.
