Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Eric Benjamin Nelson, 4th Squadron, Australian Flying Corps. A telephone engineer from North Sydney, NSW prior to enlistment, Lt Nelson embarked with the rank of Second Lieutenant with B Flight from Melbourne on RMS Omrah on 17 January 1917. Following his transfer to the 71st Squadron he was promoted to Lieutenant. Subsequently transferring back to the 4th Squadron, he was wounded in action in France and, on 29 January 1918, aged 26, he succumbed to his wounds and was buried in the Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, France.
