Description
Studio portrait of 2165 Private (Pte) George Edmund Challis, 46th Battalion. A clerk from North Melbourne prior to enlistment, Pte Challis embarked with the 4th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Orontes on 6 August 1916. Whilst serving in France he was reported as missing in action and a later Court of Enquiry established that he had been killed in action at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917, aged 19. Having no known grave, he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.
