Description

Grave marker of 3741 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Dudley Sydney Evans, 50th Battalion. A clerk from Goodwood, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked as a private with the 12th Reinforcements, 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 2 December 1915 aboard RMS Malwa for the Suez. On 2 April 1916 he was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France, in early June 1916 and he was appointed Lance Corporal (L Cpl) a month later. L Cpl Evans was wounded in action near Noreuil on 2 April 1917. He was evacuated to No 6 General Hospital, Rouen, where he died of these wounds 17 days later and is buried in the St Sever Cemetery Extension. He was aged 21 years. This grave marker replaced his original marker and preceded the headstone erected by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. In 1923 brothers-in-law Thomas Fisher and Albert Harvey toured battlefields and war cemeteries and photographed graves of their relatives.
