Informal portrait of Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) John Brake and Lieutenant (Lt) Alfred Jesse Edmonston-Fearn, both of the 8th Field Artillery Brigade, taken on board HMAT Medic. 2nd Lt Brake, an agriculturist from Mont Albert, Victoria prior to enlistment, and Lt Edmonston-Fearn, a professional soldier from Thornbury, Victoria both embarked from Melbourne on 20 May 1916. 2nd Lt Brake was subsequently promoted to Lieutenant and was appointed as the Brigade's adjutant. He returned to Australia on 19 August 1919. He later went on to serve in a part time capacity in the Second World War with the 2nd Medium Artillery Brigade and as a Temporary Major with the Melbourne University Regiment. His brothers Lt James Brake, Australian Flying Corps (AFC) and 6557 Private William Brake, 4th Field Artillery Brigade (later AFC) also served overseas. Lt Edmonston-Fearn had previously served with the Royal Horse Artillery in England and on 6 July 1917, aged 30, he was killed in action at Messines Ridge, Belgium. He was buried in the Kandahar Farm Cemetery, Belgium.
