Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) John Brake, 8th Field Artillery Brigade. An agriculturist from Mont Albert, Victoria prior to enlistment, embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Medic on 20 May 1916. He was subsequently promoted to Lieutenant and appointed as the Brigade's adjutant. He returned to Australia on 19 August 1919. He later went on to serve in a part time capacity in the Second World War with the 2nd Medium Artillery Brigade and as a Temporary Major with the Melbourne University Regiment. His brothers Lt James Brake, Australian Flying Corps (AFC) and 6557 Private William Brake, 4th Field Artillery Brigade (later AFC) also served overseas.
