Informal portrait of 6557 Gunner (Gnr) William Brake, 4th Field Artillery Brigade (FAB). A station overseer from Hamilton, Victoria prior to enlistment, Gnr Brake embarked with the 11th Battery from Melbourne on HMAT Wiltshire on 18 November 1915. Later transferring to No. 69 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps (AFC) with the rank of 2nd Air Mechanic, he returned to Australia on 6 May 1919. His brothers Lieutenant (Lt) James Brake, AFC and Lt John Brake, 8th FAB also served overseas.
