Description
Informal portrait of 6545 Gunner (Gnr) John Wilfred Fenton, 4th Field Artillery Brigade (FAB) taken on board HMAT Wiltshire. A grazier from Hamilton, Victoria prior to enlistment, Gnr Fenton embarked with the 11th Battery from Melbourne on 18 November 1915. He was later awarded the Military Medal for assisting wounded comrades. Subsequently transferring to the 5th FAB he was promoted to Lieutenant and was wounded in action and gassed. On 19 June 1918, aged 25, he succumbed to the effects of the gassing and was buried in the Boulogne East Cemetery, France.
