Informal outdoor portrait of Australian soldiers 2761 Private (Pte) Richard Edwin Nicholls MM (left) and 2837B Temporary Sergeant (T/Sgt) George Morris Jonas with Mr Kerr, a Scottish relative of Pte Nicholls. Pte Nicholls, of Moonee Ponds, Victoria, enlisted in 1916 (aged 16 but claiming to be 18) and was assigned to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion. He later transferred to the 46th Battalion, and was awarded a Military Medal in May 1918. Following a period of leave in July 1918 he returned to his unit, and, on 17 August 1918, he was wounded in action and died the next day, aged 18 years. He was awarded a posthumous Distinguished Conduct Medal in October 1918. T/Sgt Jonas of Collingwood, Victoria, also served with the 46th Battalion. In August 1918 Jonas was gassed and invalided to England for treatment, leaving for Australia in January 1919.
