Informal portrait of 2555 Private (Pte) Alfred Williamson, 14th Battalion. A school teacher from Gippsland, Victoria, Pte Williamson embarked with the 8th Reinforcements from Melbourne on SS Makarini on 15 September 1915. Following service at Gallipoli, he was promoted through the ranks, finally reaching the rank of Captain. Later reported as missing in action, a subsequent court of enquiry determined that he had been killed in action on 11 April 1917. Having no known grave, he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
