Military Camp at Rutherford. Identified is on the left hand side of the gun on the right is, 58 Private (Pte) William (Bill) Martin Kelly, 9th Machine Gun Battalion, of Balmain, NSW. A tailor prior to enlistment Pte Kelly embarked from Sydney, aboard HMAT Benalla (A24) on 1 May, 1916. Prior to service Pte Kelly also had an outstanding football career and made an international appearance as a centre for Australia in the first Test against England at the Royal Agricultural Ground, Syndey. He made further representative appearances for NSW in 1915 and captain-coached an undefeated Balmain Tigers side to the club's first premiership victory season in 1915. He survived the war and returned to Australia under a medical discharge on 12 June 1916. The Rutherford area was first used for training by the citizen's force in the years prior to the First World War. It remained in use through the inter-war period and during the Second World War was used for the training of both AIF and militia troops.
