Portrait of Captain (Capt) Bernard John Carey, 9th Machine Gun Company of Randwick, NSW. Prior to enlistment Capt Carey had military experience working with the Instructions Staff of the Citizen's Military Forces. He embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Marathon (A74) on 4 May, 1916. On enlistment he was given the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and in seven months was promoted to Captain and became the Commanding Officer of the 9th Australian Machine Gun Company. Capt Carey survived the war and returned to Australia aboard H.T. Wahehe on 15 December, 1919.
