Japanese earring : Miss Margaret Elder
Description
Screw back earring in the shape of a butterfly. The body, antennae, edges of the wings, back and screw fitting are of brass. The black damascene inserts that form the wings are inlaid with Japanese scenes in gold and silver. The bottom of the left wing also carries 'K 24' [24 carat gold].
History / Summary
This earring (originally one of a pair), was purchased in Japan by 2/42736 Signaller Robert George Elder while he was on leave. Elder served in Korea in 1955-1956 with the Royal Australian Corps of Signals. He sent it to Australia as a gift for his sister, Margaret.
