Description
Voluntary nurse Ella Rickman with her son 1102 Private (Pte) Ernest Charles Rickman (also Ernest Carl Rickman), 2nd Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron. Mrs Rickman followed her son to Egypt and engaged to work as a civilian nurse or VAD at Gezireh [Giza] and later as matron at the Anzac Hostel in Cairo. Pte Rickman served with a number of units including the 12th Light Horse Regiment and the 2nd Light Horse Brigade Machine Gun Squadron. In January 1918 he was mentioned in General Murray's Dispatch. In February 1918 he had four toes amputated after they were crushed by a moving train he was attempting to board.
