Gauze bandage with shrapnel : Driver A S Deacon, 10th Field Artillery Brigade, AIF
Used, rolled up gauze bandage containing a peice of rusted shrapnel.
This piece of shrapnel wrapped in a bandage was removed from the left leg of 3593 Amos Samuel Deacon, when he was wounded on the Western Front.
Deacon was a farmer prior to enlisting with the Australian Imperial Force. On 17 August 1915 he enlisted from Burnie, Tasmania, at the age of 18. Assigned as a Private to 15th Battalion, he underwent training in Victoria. On 27 October 1915 he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ulysses and proceeded to Egypt.
He was admitted to hospital due to illness and after his recovery transferred to 110 Howitzer Battery, Australian Field Artillery on 13 of March 1916 as a driver. Stationed in France he transferred to the 10th Field Artillery Brigade and was wounded in action on 9 August 1918 by a piece of shrapnel to his left leg. He was admitted to Cambridge Hospital, Aldershot, England on 16 August 1918.
On 1 February 1919 Deacon returned to Australia aboard HMAT Nestor and was discharged 29 April 1919.
