Studio portrait of 1756 Private (Pte) James Henry Watson, 50th Battalion. A tailor's presser from Adelaide, SA prior to enlistment, Pte Watson embarked with the 2nd Reinforcements from Adelaide on HMAT Aeneas on 11 April 1916. Whilst serving in France he was gassed and later awarded the Military Medal for bravery whilst acting as a stretcher bearer. Subsequently wounded in action, he returned to Australia on 24 January 1918 and, due to the extent of his wounds, was medically discharged.
