Portrait of 184 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) William James Atkins, 12th Battalion (left) with his brother Thomas Atkins. L Cpl Atkins, a cabinetmaker of Launceston, Tasmania, served as a Sergeant in the Citizens Military Forces. He enlisted in the AIF on 2 September 1914 and embarked aboard HMAT Geelong (A2) from Hobart on 20 October 1914. L Cpl Atkins served at Gallipoli where he was promoted to Corporal, and then to Sergeant on 1 July 1915. L Cpl Atkins went on to the Western Front and was killed in action at the Battle of Pozieres, France on 24 July 1916. He was 21 years old.
