Studio portrait of Captain Eric William Gregg Wren, wearing a Croix de Guerre ribbon, 3rd Battalion. A 26 year old clerk from Berry, NSW, when he enlisted as 1487 Private Wren, he went on to be commissioned whilst serving at Gallipoli, where he was wounded on two occasions. Wounded again, at Pozieres, gangrene necessitated that his arm be amputated. After an eight month convalescence, he was posted to the 14th Training Battalion, where he served as second-in-command for five months before returning to Australia.
Wren enlisted for service in the Second World War on 12 June 1941 with the Service number N272113 and the rank of Major and posted to Melbourne, Victoria. He became ill and was admitted to Caufield Military Hospital where he died on 24 June 1941.
