Description
Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX22222 Sergeant Albert Speer, 2/2 Field Ambulance. Collection consists of three personal letters written at the conclusion of the war by Lt Col Richard Stanley Smibert OBE to Sgt Albert Speer. Smibert was formerly Speer's commanding officer in 2/2/ Field Ambulance. The letters discuss past associations, Wewak, Communism in Australia, discipline and leadership. Albert Speer's war service in New Guinea was the beginning of a long association with that country, working in the area of health until his retirement in 1971. In 1978 he was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his work in the Papua New Guinea Public Health Department.
