Studio portrait of 5200 Private (Pte) John Jenkins Townson, 15th Battalion. A clerk from Cairns, Queensland prior to enlistment, Pte Townson embarked with the 16th Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Star of Victoria on 31 March 1916. Later transferring to the 47th Battalion, he was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium on 12 October 1917, aged 36, and was buried near where he fell. Following the Armistice, his grave could not be located and he is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
