Collection relating to the Second World War service of TX8234 Gunner Trevor John ‘Jacky’ Eiszele, 2/9 Armoured Regiment and 2/8 Field Regiment, Second Australian Imperial Force, Australia and Borneo, 1941 - 1946.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Contains 2 folders of material relating to Gunner Trevor John ‘Jack’ Eiszele, dated from 1941 to 1946.

Folder 1 of 2 - Consists of 35 letters [including associated envelopes], and one Christmas greeting card hand written by Gunner Eiszele to his mother, Minnie Maud Eiszele and sisters, Pauline Dawn Eiszele and Betty Ileana Eiszele, dated from 6 November 1941 to 22 August 1945. These letters were written during his service with 2/9 Armoured Regiment in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, and 2/8 Field Regiment in Borneo. In these letters he writes about his movements, health, finances and gambling, dental work, tank and gunning training, poor food rations, daily operations, recreational leave and activities (including travel, swimming, concerts, dances and pictures), the local weather and wildlife, latest casualties and requests for various personal supplies. Gunner Eiszele also responds to news from home, enquires about Minnie’s health and gives well wishes to friends and family, including his wife Phyllis Nancy Eiszele (née Bain).

History / Summary

Gunner Trevor John ‘Jacky’ Eiszele enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force in Hobart, Tasmania on 30 September 1941. He first served with 2/9 Australian Armoured Regiment in Puckapunyal, Victoria. He was posted to Singleton, New South Wales at the start of 1943. In 1944 they moved to Atherton Tablelands, Queensland. He was posted to Morotai, Indonesia on the 21 April 1945, and then served in Borneo. On 18 September 1945, Gunner Eiszele was listed as missing presumed dead, amongst 28 other servicemen travelling on board an aircraft from Biak Island, New Guinea to Higgins Field, Queensland. Gunner Trevor John ‘Jacky’ Eiszele’s remains were found and buried at Port Moresby War Cemetery, New Guinea on 26 January 1971.
