Informal outdoor portrait of V69104 Private (Pte) David George Reid. He enlisted with 39 Battalion (Hawthorne Kew Regiment) on 22 August 1940 in Brunswick, Vic. The Hawthorne Kew Regiment was deployed to Papua as defence against Japanese forces and arrived in Moresby in January 1942. On 6 December 1942, the Regiment was engaged in heavy fighting with Japanese forces in an attempt to secure Gona Mission. The fighting resulted in many losses for 39 Battalion. Pte Reid was killed in action in Papua on 7 December 1942. He was 22 years old.
