Description

The skiffs, 'Fury' and 'Spitfire' being constructed, at the Madang Sailing Club & Flying Squadron. 'Fury' was constructed by NX156184 (N170398) Corporal Stanley Spicer and NX143559 (N13047) Staff Sergeant Mervyn Ellis Blanch. The Madang Sailing Club and Flying Squadron was formed by members of the 8th Field Company while stationed in New Guinea during the Second World War. Many of the boats sailed by the club were made by the members in their free time from recycled and scrounged materials and modelled after Sydney Harbour skiffs of the 1930s. The club frequently held regattas, open to all services for both Australian and American service personnel stationed in the region.
