Informal portrait of NX40549 Corporal (Cpl) Allan Charles Walter Counter and NX40206 Private (Pte) Vincent John McTaggart, both of the 2/18th Battalion, standing with a harnessed pony. Cpl Counter and Pte McTaggart died on 9 February 1942 during the Japanese invasion of Singapore which had begun on the night of 8 February. In the intial confusion of the Japanese invasion, Cpl Counter had been listed as missing believed prisoner and was later revised to killed in action.
