History / Summary

This patch is a type example of an unofficial patches worn in Timor Leste (East Timor) by deployed members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) on Operation Astute. The operation is part of the ADF's continuing contribution to the maintenance of peace and stability in East Timor, following a request from the Government of Timor-Leste to the Australian Government in 2006. The New Zealand contingent in the same operation is known as GYRO 12.

A diverse range of limited edition patches are worn in both barracks environments and in the field on operations by ADF members. The badges illustrate and reinforce the small group/unit comraderie that is formed in peacetime, pre-deployment and during the eventual deployment to either combat or peacekeeping missions.
The patches provide a recognizable emblem and are often a source of intense pride amongst members of the unit in a multi-national military environment. They are also a form of currency and are often given as gifts and used as token of respect amongst units and individuals who have served with or alongside them.

Unofficial patches are usually of a temporary nature and have a short life-span once the deployments to which they relate are completed.
