Studio portrait of 215 Private John Colvin Evans, 19th Battalion
Description
Studio portrait of 215 Private (Pte) John Colvin Evans, 19th Battalion. A bank clerk from Strathfield, NSW prior to enlistment, Evans embarked with the rank of Lance Corporal with A Company from Melbourne on HMAT Ceramic on 25 June 1915. Whilst serving at Gallipoli he contracted typhoid fever and was evacuated to Malta. Later joining his battalion on the Western Front, he was wounded in action and promoted to Sergeant. On 9 October 1917, aged 24, he was killed in action and was buried where he fell. Subsequently his grave could not be located and he is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
