Towle, William Allen (Private, b.1921 - d.1998)
Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX148535 Private William Allen Towle, 41 Battalion. Collection consists of seven letters written to Pte William Towle (known as Bill) during 1941-1943. Four of the letters were written by Gwenyth King during 1942 (they married that year); a handwritten letter (also a typed version) written in July 1941 by NX57797 Gunner Reginald Smith, 2/9 Field Regiment in Syria, describing his travels from Egypt to Syria including places such as Palestine, Gaza, Tel-Aviv, Alexandria, Cairo as well as his detailed opinion of the Arabs; also another 1941 letter and 2/9 Field Regiment Christmas card from Smith; and a letter written in 1943 by N50776 Private Leslie Richmond King (Towle's brother-in-law), congratulating him on the birth of his first child. Also included is a poem written by Norma Preen in 1941 describing Bill and Gwen's budding romance.
