McFarlane, Mary Hamilton (Lieutenant Sister, b.1915 - d.1943)
Collection relating to the Second World War service of SFX11679 Lieutenant Sister Mary Hamilton McFarlane, Australian Army Nursing Service, 2/3 Australian Hospital Ship Centaur, 1943.
Collection consists of one four-page letter from Lieutenant Sister McFarlane to SFX25163 Lieutenant Mollie Humble Monks (later Wood), dated 19 April 1943. The letter was written on board the 2/3 Australian Hospital Ship Centaur. In her letter, McFarlane mentions being busy with nursing work, news of mutual friends in other units, cocktail parties, a picnic, being on night duty, sleeping in a deckchair during her time off, and waiting to use the one nurse’s shower.
Lieutenant Sister McFarlane was on board the Centaur when it was sunk by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine on 14 May 1943. She was killed, alongside 267 others.
