Studio portrait of S110375 Private (Pte) Colin Tonkin, 31/51st Battalion. Prior to enlisting on 7 February 1942, Pte Tonkin worked at the Co-Operative stores in Broken Hill. After enlistment, Pte Tonkin trained in the north of Queensland, using American amphibious landing craft. In July 1943, Pte Tonkin was stationed in Merauke, Dutch New Guinea, and remained there for 20 months before being deployed to Bougainville, New Guinea. Pte Tonkin was killed in action on 8 June 1945. He was 21 years old.
