Queens South Africa medal : Private P R Taylor, New South Wales Mounted Rifles
Queen's South Africa Medal with clasps for WITTEBERGEN, DIAMOND HILL, JOHANNESBURG and CAPE COLONY. Impressed around edge with recipient's details. The ribbon is badly damaged and is not complete.
This Queens South Africa medal relates to the service of Trooper Prince Richard Taylor of 'E' Squadron of the New South Wales Mounted Rifles during the Boer War.
Taylor was born in Rylstone, NSW, in 1878 to James and Jane Taylor. He served alongside an uncle and four of his other brothers in the Boer War, with one just arriving in South Africa after the cessation of hostilities. The brothers served with a variety of units including the NSW Mounted Rifles, NSW Imperial Bushmen and the 5th Australian Commonwealth Horse. This is the highest number of known siblings from one Australian family to have served in the South African War. Prince departed for South Africa in 1899 and spent twelve months engaged in operations against the Boers, including the significant battle of Diamond Hill.
Prince married Margaret Stavert in Burwood Sydney in 1901. A small rifle club medal was awarded to Taylor by the Dubbo Rifle Club in 1912. Prince Richard Taylor died in Sydney in 1954.
