Description

Digital collection relating to the First World War service of Captain Malcolm Stuart Kennedy, 5 Light Horse Regiment, 52 Battalion and Headquarters 1 Australian Division in France. Collection consists of a PDF file of typed transcripts of Kennedy's 87 letters home written between 1914 and 1918. The letters are well written and very descriptive covering a large range of topics such as Moslem women, nature of war, ineffectiveness of life, Cairo, trench strategy, visits and sights, machine gun school, Christmas, homesickness, English politics, France, being gassed, staff duties, Zeppelins, horses, weather, mud, detailed reconnaissance, German retreat, villages being flattened, leave in England, inspections by the King, the taking of Glencorse and Polygon Woods, tunnels, Australia's recruiting system, future prospects in the army or politics, and the Australian referendum. Also included are condolence letters. Kennedy was hit by a shell and died of wounds on 2 January 1918 and buried at Dranoutre Military Cemetery, Belgium. A paper copy is available for access.
