Description

Studio portrait of 4026 Private (Pte) Harold Leslie Larsen, 3rd Field Ambulance, Australian Army Medical Corps. Pte Larsen was an engine driver from Bundaberg, Queensland when he enlisted in February 1915, seeing service at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. An award of the Military Medal (MM) was confirmed on 1st November 1917, for his actions described in the following recommendation:
"At WESTHOEK, East of YPRES and the area forward of this place on 4th. October 1917 whilst working in a bearer squad, highly distinguished himself and set a splendid example to all bearers. For seven days in succession, with a break of only 20 hours, he helped to carry wounded back to safety by day and night, under heavy shellfire, through shell holes and knee deep mud. When rations ran out and supplies of stretchers were needed this man formed one of a volunteer squad to return at night over a mile of trackless shell holed country, and through the concentrated fire of the enemy counter attack. He set a high example to all stretcher bearers associated with him." Pte Larsen MM was killed in action on 9th November 1917, whilst attached to the 2nd Field Ambulance at Ypres.
A Military Medal ribbon has been added to the photograph, which is mounted on a memorial card.
