Description
Studio portrait of 1868 Acting Corporal (A/Cpl)) Winton Merlin Langtry, 38th Battalion. A farm labourer from Moulamein, NSW prior to enlistment, A/Cpl Langtry embarked with the 2nd Reinforcements from Melbourne on RMS Orontes on 16 August 1916. Later reverting to the rank of Private he was killed in action in Belgium on 4 October 1917, aged 20, and was buried near where he fell. Following the Armistice, his remains were exhumed and re-interred in the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium. His older brother, 626 Corporal Leslie Reed Langtry, 2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment, was killed in action on 4 December 1917, also in Belgium.
