Group portrait of Australian and Ottoman Turkish officers and officials on board the Australian ...
Group portrait of Australian and Ottoman Turkish officers and officials on board the Australian No. 2 Hospital Ship, SS Kanowna. The vessel had arrived at Fouges Bay, about 16 km north of Smyrna, that morning, the day that the Armistice between Turkey and Great Britain and its allies came into force. The purpose of the ship's visit was to pick up Australian, British and Indian prisoners of war (POWs) of the Turks and take them to Egypt. On its departure from Turkish waters the next day were 758 released POWs, including eight women and the crew of the Australian submarine AE2 which had been sunk in the Sea of Marmara in April 1915. The Australian officer third from left in the middle row is the ship's Senior Medical Officer (SMO), Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Joseph Mackenzie. The Turkish official fourth from left in the same row is probably Raouf (or Rauf) Bey, the Ottoman Minister of Marine, and the naval officer fifth from left next to him is almost certainly the ship's captain, Captain Percival Henning Day. On the right end of the same row, the Turkish officer may be Lieutenant Colonel Saadullah Bey of the Turkish General Staff. The Australian officer second from left in the front row is probably Major John Sandison Yule, while the naval officer at the right end of the back row is wearing the uniform of a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve and may be the ship's First or Chief Officer, F. Ross. The back row may also include the ship's junior medical officers, Captain Reginald Patrick MacGillicuddy, Captain Arthur Adrian McKay and Captain Roy Buckingham Trindall.
