Description

Iraqi military forces set fire to more than 600 oil wells in Kuwait as part of a scorched earth policy during the Gulf War. The wells were ignited while the Iraq military were retreating from Kuwait in 1991. The fires started in January and February 1991 and the last one was extinguished by November 1991. 1,800 Australian Defence personnel were deployed for this conflict during August 1990 to September 1991. The force comprised of units from the Army, Navy and RAAF.
