Hand coloured studio portrait of 410398 Flying Officer (FO) Harold John Thompson, RAAF from Albury, NSW. An 18 year old shop assistant prior to joining the RAAF on 6 December 1941, he was serving with 106 Squadron RAF when he took off in a Lancaster from RAF Metheringham on 4 December 1944 for a bombing raid over Heilbronn, Germany. His aircraft was reported to have iced up and crashed between Stuttgart and Heilbronn, killing six crew members including the pilot, FO Thompson. The only survivor of the crash was taken prisoner by the Germans. FO Thompson is buried in the Durnbach War Cemetery, Germany.
