Informal outdoor portrait of 1010 Private (Pte) Victor William East Broadbent at the entrance to a dugout at Gallipoli. Originally from Sydney, he enlisted in South Australia and falsified his age as 19 years and 1 month, with his aunt posing as his mother for permission to enlist. He was only 16 years old when he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) with the 16th Battalion on 22 December 1914. Four months after the landing at Gallipoli, Pte Broadbent was injured in action and was transferred to the hospital ship Devanha for medical treatment in Malta. He was invalided to Australia aboard the HMAT Themistocles in May 1916 and eventually discharged in September. Pte Broadbent's service record contains letters from both his Aunt and Mother seeking information on his safe repatriation to Australia.
