Studio portrait of 2830 Private (Pte) Thornton Gainsborough Clarke. An electrical engineer from Essendon, Victoria, prior to enlistment, he embarked from Melbourne with the 8th Battalion aboard SS Makarini on 15 September 1915. He transferred to the 60th Battalion on 24 February 1916 and while serving with this unit, was promoted to Corporal (Cpl) on 5 May 1916. Cpl Clarke was killed in action in France on 19 July 1916. He was 24 years old.
