Description

Letters relating to the First World War service of 580 Private Harry Hodgman, 5th Infantry Battalion. The letters from Hodgman to his mother describe the voyage to Egypt on HMAT Orvieto, including the news of the Sydney/Emden action and taking on-board German prisoners from the Emden, as well as conditions and daily life on-board. His final letter was written from Egypt, before embarking for the landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. The letters from AIF Base Records Office provide details to Hodgman's mother regarding his death at Gallipoli on that day.
