Description
Studio portrait of 4751 Sergeant (Sgt) John James Chapman, 54th Battalion, of Kendall NSW. A dairyman prior to enlistment on 14 August 1915, Chapman was awarded the Military Medal "for great gallantry and initiative during the operations at Peronne on 1st and 2nd September, 1918. His Officer having become a casualty he led his platoon with great dash and skill over very marshy ground, putting the enemy to flight and capturing many prisoners. On reaching the final objective his platoon was heavily shelled. He moved around his men showing an utter disregard for personal safety, setting a fine example to those under his command". Sgt Chapman MM returned to Australia in July 1919.
