History / Summary
Founded in the Forbidden City by American officers who had taken part in the fighting in China, the Military Order of the Dragon aimed to perpetuate memories of The China Relief Expedition. The Expedition was composed of a multi-national military force, created in 1900 for the relief of the foreign legations under siege in Peking, during the Boxer Rebellion.
The Military Order of the Dragon was open to US and allied officers and diplomats who had served in Peking and Tientsin during that period. The medals were struck by Bailey, Banks & Biddle, of Philadelphia.
