Description

Relics removed from the SMS Emden after its battle with HMAS Sydney in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands on 09 November 1914. These relics were taken aboard HMS Cadmus, a small gunboat from the China station. HMS Cadmus arrived after the destruction of the Emden and managed the removal of war relics and weaponry from the wreck. CPO Long wrote on the verso of the photograph, "Some of the results of our work. Badges and coat of arms of Emden and ships bell, which is smashed by shot and name plate taken off of her stern. This photo was taken on board this ship. The trophies are now in Australia." From left to right: "Angel on the wall" coat of arms from the bow of SMS Emden; stern ornament from the hull; Emden name plate removed from the ship's stern; battle damaged ship's bell; and second Emden coat of arms.
