Description

Waterloo Medal with a steel clip and a replacement small silver suspension ring. The edge of the medal is impressed with the recipients details in roman capitals. Obverse: The profile laureated head of the Prince Regent with the legend 'GEORGE P. REGENT' around the edge and the designer's name 'T WYON' under the neck. Reverse: The winged figure of Victory seated on a pedestal and holding a palm branch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left; below the pedestal is the word 'WATERLOO' within a rectangle over the date June 18 1815. The word 'WELLINGTON' is in raised letters above the winged figure around the rim. A piece of 39 mm ribbon of crimson with 6.5 mm dark blue edges is threaded through the suspension ring.

History / Summary

Issued to Paymaster Adolf Hagel, 1st Light Infantry Battalion, King's German Legion who served at the Battle of Waterloo on the 18 of June 1815. This medal is part of a collection assembled by the late Hon. Sir Thomas Hughes, Member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. It was presented to the Memorial in memory of his son, Captain Roger Forrest Hughes, Australian Army Medical Corps, who died of wounds in France on 11 December 1916, and of his grandson, Flying Officer Peter Roger Forrest Hughes, 12 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed on active service while flying in the Northern Territory on 3 October 1942.
