Description

Military General Service Medal 1793 - 1814 with the bars Vittoria, Pyrenees, Orthes and Toulouse. The recipient's name and regiment is indented in large roman capitals on the edge. Obverse: The diademed head of Queen Victoria and the legend 'VICTORIA REGINA' with the date '1848'. Reverse: Queen Victoria standing on a dais about to place a laurel wreath on the Duke of Wellington, who is kneeling before her. Beside the dais is a diminutive representation of the British lion dormant. Around the top half of the circumference is the inscription 'TO THE BRITISH ARMY'. In the exergue are the dates '1793-1814'. The medal is is fitted with a 32 mm crimson ribbon that has 6 mm wide dark blue borders.

History / Summary

Awarded to Private Edward Undrill, 2nd Battalion, 34th Infantry Regiment who was probably sent to Spain as a reinforcement in 1812. He saw action at the Battles of Vittoria (21 June 1813) , Pyrenees (25th July - 2nd August 1813), Orthes (27th February 1814) and Toulouse (10th April 1814). The total number of medals claimed by the regiment were 198. This medal is part of a collection assembled by the late Hon. Sir Thomas Hughes, Member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. It was presented to the Memorial in memory of his son, Captain Roger Forrest Hughes, Australian Army Medical Corps, who died of wounds in France on 11 December 1916, and of his grandson, Flying Officer Peter Roger Forrest Hughes, 12 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed on active service while flying in the Northern Territory on 3 October 1942.
