Description

Sutlej Medal with the bar 'SOBRAON'. The recipient's name and regiment are impressed around the edge. Obverse: The diademed head of Queen Victoria and the legend 'VICTORIA REGINA'. Reverse: The standing figure of Victory, facing left. In her outstretched right hand she holds a wreath and in her left an olive branch. At her feet is a collection of trophies. The legend 'ARMY OF THE SUTLEJ' is written around the circumference and the exergue has 'FEROZESHUHUR' over '1845'. The medal is fitted with an ornamental swivelling scroll suspender. A piece of 32 mm dark blue ribbon with crimson edges is threaded through the top bar.

History / Summary

Awarded to Private Thomas Imber, 62nd Infantry Regiment for service at the battles of Ferozeshuhur (21-22 December 1845) and Sobraon (10 February 1846). The medal with various combinations of reverses and bars were granted to British and Indian troops commanded by General Sir Hugh Gough during the First Sikh War (1845-46). The 62nd Regiment had 260 casualties at the Battle of Ferozeshuhur. This medal is part of a collection assembled by the late Hon. Sir Thomas Hughes, Member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. It was presented to the Memorial in memory of his son, Captain Roger Forrest Hughes, Australian Army Medical Corps, who died of wounds in France on 11 December 1916, and of his grandson, Flying Officer Peter Roger Forrest Hughes, 12 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed on active service while flying in the Northern Territory on 3 October 1942.
