Khedive's Star

Khedive's Star (1882 - 1891). Unnamed as issued. Obverse: In the centre is the Sphinx with the three Great Pyramids in the background. Around this is a raised band, on the upper part of which is embossed 'EGYPT' followed by the date '1882'. The lower part of the band is embossed in Arabic 'KHEDIVE OF EGYPT' with the appropriate date. Reverse: The Khedive's monogram 'T.M.' surmounted by a crown within a raised band. The suspender is a small fixed loop attached between the two uppermost rays of the star. A loose ring is attached to the loop joining a straight laureated bar bearing a crescent moon and a small five pointed star. A small piece of 39 mm plain dark blue ribbon is attached to the suspender bar.

These stars were authorised by the Sultan of Turkey and conferred by the Khedive of Egypt, Tewfik Mahommed, to all those involved in the suppression of the Egyptian rebellion of 1882 and the campaigns in Egypt and Sudan between 1884 and 1889. All recipients of the British Egypt Medal received an appropriate dated (or undated) star. This medal is part of a collection assembled by the late Hon. Sir Thomas Hughes, Member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. It was presented to the Memorial in memory of his son, Captain Roger Forrest Hughes, Australian Army Medical Corps, who died of wounds in France on 11 December 1916, and of his grandson, Flying Officer Peter Roger Forrest Hughes, 12 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed on active service while flying in the Northern Territory on 3 October 1942.
