Description

Natal Rebellion Medal with the bar '1906'. The recipient's rank, name and unit are impressed on the edge. Obverse: The coinage head of King Edward VII facing right, with the legend, 'EDWARDVS VII REX IMPERATOR'. Reverse: In the centre are the figures of Natalia and Britannia. Natalia has her left foot upon a Kaffir shield and weapon, indicating the crushing of a rebellion, while in her right hand she holds a down turned sword and in her left a branch of palm. Standing beside her is Britannia in an attitude of protection, holding in her hand the orb of the Empire surmounted by a figure of peace. In the background is a hilly landscape with natives, Kaffir kraals and storm clouds receding with the rays of the sun behind. In the exergue is the word 'NATAL'. The medal is fitted with a straight swivelling suspender and a single rectangular date bar. A piece of 32 mm crimson (faded) ribbon with black edges is attached to the suspender.

History / Summary

Awarded to Corporal G Morrison of the Natal Rangers who took part in the suppression of the Zulu Rising of 1906. There were 907 medals issued to this unit of which 839 had the '1906' bar. This medal is part of a collection assembled by the late Hon. Sir Thomas Hughes, Member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. It was presented to the Memorial in memory of his son, Captain Roger Forrest Hughes, Australian Army Medical Corps, who died of wounds in France on 11 December 1916, and of his grandson, Flying Officer Peter Roger Forrest Hughes, 12 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed on active service while flying in the Northern Territory on 3 October 1942.
