New Zealand Volunteer Service Medal : Gunner R McMinn, New Zealand Garrison Artillery Volunteers
New Zealand Volunteer Service Medal. The recipient's number, rank, name and unit are impressed on the edge. Obverse: A right facing profile of King Edward VII with 'NEW ZEALAND VOLUNTEER' around the top and '12 YEARS SERVICE MEDAL' around the foot. Reverse: A kiwi surrounded by a wreath tied at the bottom with a bow. The medal is fitted with a loose top ring suspender and a piece of plain 35 mm khaki ribbon (faded).
Awarded to Gunner Robert McMinn of No.5 Company, New Zealand Garrison Artillery Volunteers for 12 years service. There were two reverse dies for this medal. Type 1 (1902-04) the beak of the kiwi touches the ground and Type 2 (1905-12) there is a space between the beak and the ground. The issue of this medal is quite rare and became obsolete in 1912. This medal is part of a collection assembled by the late Hon. Sir Thomas Hughes, Member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. It was presented to the Memorial in memory of his son, Captain Roger Forrest Hughes, Australian Army Medical Corps, who died of wounds in France on 11 December 1916 and his grandson, Flying Officer Peter Roger Forrest Hughes, 12 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed on active service while flying in the Northern Territory on 3 October 1942.
