Description

New Zealand Medal. The recipients number, name and regiment are impressed around the edge. Obverse: Diademed head of Queen Victoria with a veil covering the back of her head. Around the circumference is the legend 'VICTORIA D:G:BRITT:REG:F:D'. Reverse: Undated. In the centre a laurel wreath with, around the circumference, 'NEW ZEALAND' on top and 'VIRTUTIS HONOR' on the bottom. The medal is fitted with a straight ornamental suspender and a piece of 32 mm ribbon of dark blue that has a 10 mm red stripe down the centre.

History / Summary

Awarded to Private James Callaghan of the 99th Infantry Regiment who served in First New Zealand War between 1846 and 1847. He also served with the regiment in Australia between 1842 and 1856. The medal was approved on 1 March 1869, for issue to survivors only, of those who had taken part in suppressing Maori risings on the North Island between 1845 and 1846 , on the South Island in 1847, and for general service in New Zealand between 1860 and 1866. This medal is part of a collection assembled by the late Hon. Sir Thomas Hughes, Member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. It was presented to the Memorial in memory of his son, Captain Roger Forrest Hughes, Australian Army Medical Corps, who died of wounds in France on 11 December 1916, and of his grandson, Flying Officer Peter Roger Forrest Hughes, 12 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed on active service while flying in the Northern Territory on 3 October 1942.
